Creating a Disability Friendly Environment, Unesa Develops UDIM Program

KOMPAS.com - The government continues to encourage various parties to provide equal rights for persons with disabilities. Starting from the issue of providing jobs for people with disabilities to environmentally friendly schools or colleges. In this case, the State University of Surabaya (Unesa) is developing the Unesa Disability Inclusion Metric (UDIM) as a universal parameter of the level of accessibility of persons with disabilities in institutions or organizations. UDIM was launched to measure disability inclusion in organizations. It is also the first disability inclusion metric in Indonesia and a reference for world organizations.

Become an indicator to measure inclusion quality

Head of the Center for the Study of Disability Services (PSLD) Unesa, Prof. Budiyanto said that currently Unesa and various other parties were focusing on developing indicators. The development of UDIM aims to provide indicators as well as measure the quality level of disability inclusion in an organization. The expected benefits are to become a reference indicator for the development of disability inclusion quality and become a material for evaluating the quality level of disability inclusion in an organization. "This is an important reference or indicator for organizations or institutions including universities in the world. After discussions with the team, experts, users and partners and based on existing input, a revised draft will be launched in the near future," explained Prof. Budiyanto as quoted from the Unesa page, Saturday (18/6/2022).

Create a disability-friendly environment

Unesa's Deputy Chancellor for Planning and Cooperation, Sujarwanto, explained that the development of UDIM is part of Unesa's commitment to creating a disability-friendly environment in various institutions and people from Indonesia to the world. According to him, it was one of the major breakthroughs made by the 'One Step Ahead' campus to improve the quality of accessibility for persons with disabilities in various fields.

Previously, Unesa designed an application that made it easier for the disabled workforce to access jobs in companies or industries. Then develop a sign language dictionary or Signalong Indonesia with foreign experts. Unesa was trusted by the government to showcase innovations in disability services in Dubai some time ago. "Unesa received an inclusive campus award from the ministry in 2013 and the Service Unit for Children with Special Needs in 2014," he explained. Disability empowerment, continued Sujarwanto, is one of Unesa's flagship programs. This is supported by many physical resources and qualified human resources. In addition, Unesa's experts in the field of disability have received national and international recognition. Unesa continues to innovate to support all forms of disability empowerment.
